Disc Toss

The First Annual Red Cross Disc Toss, disc-golf family weekend will be held June 21 & 22 at Stuart Nelson Park.  This disc-golf event will be a fun event for the entire family.  Saturday events will begin at 9:00 am with a “free” how-to clinic and fun games.  There will be competitive events that weekend with a $5 entry fee for each event.  Sunday afternoon, at 1:00 pm, will be a disc-golf tournament. Registration for Sunday’s tournament will be $20 per person.   Concessions will be available with hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches and cold drinks.  I believe it will be a FUN weekend for the entire community and has the potential to be a great fundraiser!

THE NUTS AND BOLTS:  Thom Clark, the Director of the Paducah Area Disc Golf Association has volunteered to manage the event.  He has a great deal of experience planning disc golf tournaments and is excited about volunteering.  The entire Disc Golf Association is backing us on this event and has volunteered to teach the How-To Clinics and help promote the event through their network of disc-golf players.

Although entry fees may bring in some revenue, our greatest opportunity is to have area businesses sponsor all 18 holes.  A KEY selling point is that this fund raiser will go toward sponsoring our runner at the Community Foundation Fund Run, July 19.  Donations will be matched, dollar for dollar, through the Fund Run Event.

T-Shirts: We will include a tournament t-shirt for participants in Sunday’s tournament, and also sell t-shirts at the event.

Concessions: Robert Burgess has volunteered to cook BBQ sandwiches to sell at the event.  We will also have hot dogs and cold drinks available.  Smelling the food while the event is going on should help sales considerably.

VOLUNTEERS: We will need volunteers to help with concessions, traffic control, and soliciting donations. If you would like to help with this event, please let us know.  Our next committee meeting will be Tuesday, May 13 at noon.

Hope to see you there!

MARSHA HAYS NAMED LOCAL RED CROSS, VICE-CHAIR DISASTER SERVICES

Paducah, Ky., April 9, 2008 – Marsha Hays has been named Disaster Chair of the Paducah Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. In this volunteer position, she will assist the Disaster Chair coordinating the Chapter’s local disaster response.

Marsha joined the American Red Cross in 1997, where she worked with the Appleton, WI Chapter. After relocating to Texas, she worked with the Dallas Chapter and has been deployed to six national disaster response operations. Marsha and her husband came to Paducah after her husband accepted employment with a local company.

Marsha states, “My first goal is to strengthen our Disaster Action Team (DAT) by recruiting and training new volunteers. By strengthening the DAT team, we will be able to better serve the community and raise awareness of our services.”

The Paducah Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provides disaster preparedness and response, and health and safety education to residents of Ballard, Hickman, Livingston and McCracken counties, as well as assistance to families with members in the military. Led by volunteers, the Paducah Area Chapter responded to nearly 40 local disaster incidents in the past year.
